final fantasy should be higher up, diablo is fine, WoW probably should be in the bottom half of the list, guild wars should be somewhere in the middle.

My list would be:
1. Baldur's Gate Series.
2. Fallout.
3. Planescape: Torment.
4. Deus EX.
5. Morrowind.
6. Guild Wars Series.
7. Star Wars: Kotor 1-2.
8. System Shock 2.
9. World of Warcraft.
10. Final Fantasy Series.

Damn! no rooms for Ultima and Shemue or Dragon Quest Series.
But hybrid FPS/RPG didn't count in the original list.

I don't like etta's list that much either....I think final fantasy needs to be near the top.

Also about the "guild wars picks up anyone who doesn't wanna pay for WoW."
I'd rather buy FF11 than WoW...World of Warcraft has poor graphics and being a warcraft/startcraft player....I've seen many friends leave warcraft to go play WoW, then quit WoW soon after gaining the max level. WoW has a bad reputation from my point of view so I wasn't interested in buying it.

Chrono Trigger? Secret of Mana? The Legend of Zelda? Wizardry? Eye of the Beholder?

Either there's a great deal missing from this article or I've just shown how old I am.

I know what you mean, I like FFs as much as anyone who like them, including FF tactic. It just their western counterpart have more freedom in term of gameplay, like Fallout or BG. Look at FF12 and how much different it is to the older FF, more freedom to do whatever you want, the story line is still there but you don't feel like it was force upon you. Square (SQENIX) was putting an online taste on its baby, and it was great.

By all mean my list was just that, mine. Same with Mick's list in his blog. If I offended anyone, I do apologizes.

I don't like Final Fantasy, but why the hell isn't it on top? Seriously, it basicly was the foundation for RPGs. And where's Ocarina of Time? That list seems more like a "My personal list of favorite games." World of Warcraft on top? It may be popular, but it is by no means original or impacting.
